The Woodpecker Open Mic FAQ

Where and when is the open mic?
At The Woodpecker, 42-44 Battersea High Street, SW11 3XH, every Wednesday night. Sign-up opens at 7:30 PM, and the music starts at 8:00 PM. We finish around 11:30 PM.

How do I get there?

The venue is around 3 minutes walk from Battersea High Street bus stop on the 170 route - this takes around 15 mins from Victoria or 10 from Clapham Junction

 

What kind of performances are allowed?
The Woodpecker is a super-friendly, relaxed, local Battersea venue that welcomes all performers. Most acts are musical, including singer-songwriters, duos, and instrumentalists. Other forms of performance, such as poetry or comedy, are also welcome.

 

How do I sign up?
Sign-up is in person on the night at the venue. The sign-up sheet opens at 7:30 PM, but we can usually fit you in if you arrive later.

 

Can I sign up for a future open mic night in advance?
Yes, we offer a limited number of pre-saved slots each week. Please send us a request using the form below.

 

How long can I perform?
Each act usually gets 15 minutes, including setup time. Depending on the number of performers, you may get a chance to play more than one spot. Please be ready to go when it’s your turn!

 

What equipment is provided?
We provide excellent sound equipment, including DI boxes on stage, a mixing desk, an engineer, a bass amp, mics, mic stands and keyboards. Just bring your instrument and any specific cables you need to plug into the amp or DI boxes.

 

Is there a cover charge?
Nope! Entry is completely free for both performers and audience members.

 

Can I bring guests?
Absolutely! Bring your friends, family, and fans to enjoy the evening and support the performers.

 

Do I get paid?
While we can’t offer payment, you’ll gain the experience of performing live and connecting with a warm, supportive audience.

 

Is there a dress code?
Anything goes! Come as you are.

 

Are there age restrictions?
Yes, The Woodpecker has an 18+ age limit.

 

Is the venue accessible?
Yes, The Woodpecker’s main area, performance space, and toilets are wheelchair accessible.

 

Can I perform original songs/material, or are covers okay?
Both original songs and covers are welcome.

 

Can I promote my music/social media/website during my set?
Of course! Feel free to let the audience know where to find more of your music online.

 

Can I use backing tracks?
Yes, backing tracks are allowed, but they should feature your own original work or arrangements. No karaoke tracks, please!

 

Will my performance be recorded or photographed?
We occasionally take photos or videos of performances to share on our social media (@woodpeckeropenmic). Let us know if you’d prefer not to be featured.

 

Can you help me record my demo, single, or album?
Our engineer may be able to help you capture your performance—just ask! If you’re looking to make a studio-recorded demo, single, or album, check out Andy’s studio here.

Tips for a Great Night

Be respectful of other performers: Stay to enjoy the other acts and show your support. If you need to chat, please head to another part of the venue away from the stage.

Stick to your time limit: We’re strict about the 15-minute limit to ensure everyone gets their chance to perform.

Be prepared: Setup and tuning count toward your 15 minutes, so be ready to start when your name is called.

Support the venue: Help keep the open mic night going by purchasing a drink or two from the bar.
